Volunteer!

NOWBC Co-op is run by 50% volunteer labour in the interest of getting this sustainable local food system established. Volunteer and be part of a local food movement! NOWBC is a fun bunch of people to work with, especially if you are an enthusiastic “foodie” like us. Whether you have a day, or an hour, whether you can help out every week, month, or one time only—NOWBC can use your help and raise your karma as you do good for the local food system. Email joannam@nowbc.ca and simply say, “I'd like to help.” and we'll look for a good fit for you, or check-out some of our current opportunities below.

Contacting Farms
We are looking for someone to take on the role of making contact with new and existing farms and processors participating in our on-line farmers market, keeping on top of who has what foods when, and working with our core team of enthusiastic foodies to keep the on-line market full of the incredible, seasonally available local organic goodness out there! This volunteer role includes making phone calls to producers, placing orders with them, and writing biographies for producers to include in the on-line market to keep customers informed and connected with the farms supplying them. Periodically this volunteer will also be asked to organize deliveries/pick-ups of food between the producer and the co-op, make a visit a farmers market (or occasionally a farm!), and/or visit the co-op's food warehouse in East Van. This volunteer will report to our co-op manager, feeding her information on a weekly basis recommending new foods and producers to add to the on-line market based on what is available/in season, and what sounds most delicious! A minimum commitment of 5 hours a week for 3 or more months will be needed. Some hours on Thursdays are required to prepare for market opening each Friday, though are otherwise flexible and can be worked from home for the most part.

This volunteer position is a great way to get to know your organic local farmers, bakers and cookie makers! If you enjoy food, are good with logistics, and interested in sustainability, this is sure to be a fulfilling role. Help us connect our local organic producers with our local eaters here in Greater Vancouver.

Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Joanna Michal, at joannam@nowbc.ca or 604-222-0262.

Pack Food Orders at the NOWBC Warehouse
Come visit the NOWBC warehouse (near Clark & Venables) and spend a half a day on a Wednesday or Thursday to help in packing some beautiful, local, organic foods for the clubs. We have one or two volunteers every packing day to help, please contact Joanna at joannam@nowbc.ca to volunteer!
